PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for Climate Change Greg Combet says that while the Federal Government will not offer further compensation to the coal industry, aluminium smelting would have up to 94.5% assistance.
Combet says the government won't be giving business more assistance to cope with the introduction of emissions trading just to try and win over the coalition.
The Parliamentary Secretary says that Labor has already improved the assistance package for trade-exposed industries.
Coal mining companies are in line for $750m in compensation under the carbon pollution reduction scheme (CPRS) but are pushing for more, warning of job losses.
The government needs the support of the opposition, or the entire crossbench, in the Senate, to get its legislation setting up the scheme passed.
