States battle for $12b Inpex processing plant

WESTERN Australian Premier, Colin Barnett claims the Japanese energy giant Inpex should reconsider its decision to build a gas plant in Darwin, Northern Territory.

Barnett says now that traditional owners in the Kimberly, Western Australia have agreed to allow a gas plant in the region, Inpex has the option of having a site in James Price Point.

The company originally wanted to bring gas from the Browse Basin to the Kimberley but negotiations failed and the company chose to pipe the gas to Darwin instead.

The Premiere says Inpex should reconsider its decision as the WA plant offers a far more economic way of developing their gas resource than piping it 900 kilometres to Darwin.
