Platinum key to climate change technologies

PLATINUM is a key element in the fight against climate change, scientific experts say.

Australian National University geochemist John Mavrogenes says the search for platinum needs to be intensified if the world is going to convert to hydrogen cars.

Eighty percent of the world’s supplies come from three deposits in South Africa, the US and Siberia. Australia currently has no platinum mines of its own.

Mavrogenes claims platinum is critical to fuel the hydrogen economy. However, the metal is scarce and difficult to find.

Platinum Australia [www.platinumaus.com.au] is currently developing deposits in South Africa and Australia, with plans to begin production later in 2008.

The company has also developed and patented the Panton process [httIn the long term, experts predict metals will become increasingly short in supply, which will be reflected in their price.
