HONEYWELL and Heat Transfer Research (HTRI) are collaborating to help industrial manufacturers more easily design heat exchanger equipment which is used in mineral processing plants.
The global heat transfer and exchanger technology provider says that by tightly integrating Honeywell’s UniSim Design with HTRI’s industry leading Xchanger Suite software, plants will be able to improve upon the level of detail reflected in their heat exchanger designs and projected performance in simulated plant models.
This approach will help engineers optimise overall process design and operation strategies through the assessment of prediction models which indicate how the heat exchangers will function and affect the overall plant.
UniSim Design is Honeywell’s simulation software used by plant and process engineers to create and improve processes implemented within industrial facilities. Once created, the heat exchanger design and simulation models can be used to evaluate process modifications and help improve overall plant safety, reliability and efficiency.
Ashish Gaikwad, director of advanced solutions, Honeywell Process Solutions says the heat exchanger is one of the most critical aspects of plant design because it affects so much of the overall operation and is typically one of the most expensive pieces of equipment to maintain. If a heat exchanger fails or is improperly designed, the process cannot run appropriately, which can lead to a range of issues including lost production and even safety concerns.
HTRI Xchanger Suite is an advanced engineering tool that includes nine software components for designing, rating and simulating heat exchangers. As part of the agreement, Honeywell will supply its UniSim Heat Exchanger technology to augment HTRI’s high-fidelity heat exchanger design capabilities.
Claudette Beyer, HTRI president and CEO says the company chose to work with Honeywell because UniSim is a proven simulation technology that will allow engineers to take the bigger plant picture into account when designing this very critical function. He says tightly integrating design modules and the general process flowsheet can create a superior solution that helps plants select the best heat exchanger designs for their needs.
