VEGETATION at mine sites in Perth may save the endangered cockatoo population, research has found.
Dr Hugh Finn of Murdoch University conducted research suggesting Perth’s Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) can provide a vital food source for the native birds.
The research found birds fed on native ‘health’ vegetation such as banksia, dryandra, and hakea in rehabilitation areas at the mine site.
“This means that sites like BGM can provide vital food resources if they plan their strategies accordingly,” Dr Finn said.
Researchers hope that mine sites will take action and ultimately attract the endangered bird to the area.
Controversy over the impact of land clearing on Carnaby’s cockatoos prompted the research, focusing on how to conserve and restore its habitat.
